Westminster, House of Commons - 11th December 2012
This meeting was open to all APGAW members to review the EFRA enquiry into Dog Control and Welfare that had taken place over the past couple of months. Speakers were: Neil Parish MP, James Yeates (RSPCA), Paula Boyden (Dog’s Trust), Prof Steve Dean (KC), Harvey Locke (BVA), Prof Sheila Crispin (Advisory Council). Questions were invited, and having listened to how some members were thankful that the years after Pedigree Dogs Exposed had first aired that the issue was 'complex, not simple and extremely complicated to solve', Heidi was allowed the chance to address the room with the Chancepixies stand point that "We need not re-invent the wheel, other countries already have controls on dog breeding in place - commonly known as 'Fit for Breeding tests', we could infact look at any one of these working models (pref Sweden) and adapt and improve it for the UK culture, it needs to include ALL dogs (whether pedigree, cross breed or mixed breed). Such tests should involve the character, conformation, health, ID (which should be Micro-chip alongside DNA) and responsibility beyond the point of sale. This would not only positively affect dog breeding practises, but would also help us to start to see the end to rescue (which should far from expanding, actually need not exist), dangerous dogs, ill health, puppy farms, irresponsible breeding in all its forms and irresponsible ownership." Heidi's points were listened to and largely agreed on with only one comment coming back from the panel in realtion to DNA tests alongside micro-chip saying that it would be too expensive, unfortunately no response was allowed to this, but it would have been somewhere along the lines of "Actually it is, we already do this and the cost (just £25) is factored into the price of the puppy, it is part of our responsibility beyond the point of sale that every puppy we bring into the world is ultimately tracable back to us."
Overall an interesting meeting which also touched on an increase in the importation of dogs and the welfare issues surrounding this practise, again something that we have started to get experince in and have a relatively simple answer to: the person that brings that dog into the UK needs to be responsible for it beyond the point of sale, much the same as if they had bred the dog. All Pet Passorts are checked at the point of entry, all that needs to happen is that the dog is linked to the person bringing it in and those details logged on the central database. For dogs brought in illegally this is smuggling and should be dealt with as such, in addition to smuggling charges, any welfare issues should be addressed and fined accordingly under the Animal Welfare Act as well as any other costs incurred.
Chancepixies Christmas Reunion
Sunday 9th December 2012 @ Chancepixies
This is a particularly busy time of year for you
all, so we made it an afternoon event so that everyone could have fun with
their doggies before going off to any Christmas dinners!
It was a fun and succesful event with many 'old' faces popping in to say
hello. Party games were enjoyed by all and every dog went away with
a prize.
Many thanks to everyone who attended and to all those who helped make the afternoon a success ~ Merry Christmas to you all!

With 17 acres, 3 kennel blocks, 28 kennels, a reception building, car park, rampant hedges, brambles, trees and grass – as well as the daily care and upkeep of the many dogs, the Chancepixies site takes a lot of hard work to keep it looking its best. Thanks to a bright idea by two of our volunteers, Clive and Carol, we now have lots of help! We hold a monthly clear up day, usually over the first weekend of the month. Details will be updated on the website. Our next clear-up day is on Saturday 5th January from 10am. If you can spare an hour or two we need help with everything from cleaning, maintenance and repairs to gardening - you would be made very welcome and we provide refreshments! x

Rainbow Bridge Clairvoyant Evening
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that
pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills
for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There
is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor.
Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we
remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops
and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body
quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green
grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
Many thanks to The Dover Christian Spiritualist Church, Brenda Cottingham, Maggie Carrington and everyone who attended this enlightening and touching evening. You helped raise £200 for Chancepixies, thank you x

Have you ever wondered how dogs are trained to detect cancer or to alert people if they are about to have a diabetic or epileptic seizure? The charity Cancer & Bio-detection Dogs (CBD) does just that and will be giving a talk to explain their methods. Their work seeks to establish and develop the extent to which the olfactory ability of dogs can be used to diagnose and identify disease and life threatening conditions in people. Their dogs truly save lives, many on a daily basis. Tickets are £3 and all the money raised goes to the charity. Places are limited, please call Pippa on 01303 269172 to reserve your place.

Wendy Turner-Webster visits Chancepixies and becomes Patron!

Wendy
Turner-Webster, who presented the ‘Pet Rescue’ television
series for several years, visited to see the charity’s unique approach
to the rescue and rehabilitation of abandoned dogs on Thursday 18th November
2010.
Recently commenting that she is “always saddened that (rescue) centres
like this have to exist” she was keen to learn about our ‘Fit
for Breeding’ legislation proposal which would see an end to irresponsible
breeding and the UK’s endemic stray dog population, removing the
need for a rescue industry in the country.
Mrs Turner-Webster was pleasently surprised to learn that Chancepixies
develop bespoke training and behaviour programmes for all of the rescue
animals in their care and offer lifelong support to their owners.
The charity’s independant animal behaviourist, Freya Brisley, conducted
a practical demonstration and Mrs Turner-Webster was also given a presentation
of the ‘Fit for Breeding’ legislation proposal and was quoted
to say; “I am really astonished that there is no legislation in
the UK to control dog breeding.”
Chancepixies Animal Rescue are proud to say that Wendy has happily accepted
our invitation to be Patron of the charity and to champion our cause!
Many thanks to Wendy and we look forward to working with you to make a
real difference to dogs in the UK.

Chancepixies Animal Rescue @ Pets At Home

We were at Pets At Home, Park Farm, Folkestone, Kent over the weekend of the 26th/27th June 2010. Thank you to all the staff and customers that helped us raise funds for our vital work to stop the unnecessary destruction and abandonment of so many thousands of dogs in the UK, as well as to raise awareness of our organisation.
We raised £168.75 for the two days!

A big thank you to all that supported us!
